As part of our celebration of reading awareness week, March 2-6, 2009, our commitment to the environment and going green, and in acknowledgment of Earth Day (April 22, 2009) River Ridge Elementary is excited to have students participate in a Dr. Seuss / environmental writing contest.
Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss) possessed a unique writing style that captured the attention of readers of all ages. He created new words and engaged the reader's imagination. His works are fun and inspiring to read, with his use of figurative language and imagery. This original writing style made Dr. Seuss a beloved author of stories that are still being read world-wide. One of the stories that he wrote, The Lorax, speaks to the environment. Watch the video below and think of the message that Dr. Seuss was trying to get across when he wrote this book.
To participate in the contest, simply write your own poem or short story about the importance of trees for our lives here on earth (no more than 1,500 words) similar to the style used by Dr. Seuss, and submit it here; along with your name, your classroom teacher's name and your grade level.
